Unemployment is a headache to many youths in Kenya. The situation has also been witnessed in Kibera.
However, self employment has helped many youths in the slum earn a living.
This has been seen as a good idea and so far many youths are inventing new ways of survival.
Soil selling business is the latest activity the youths are engaging in.
According to Moses Okola of Hope Youth Group, they make good profits from the venture.
“We buy a lorry of soil which is six tonnes at Sh6,000, pack it in small black bags and sell them to other people at Sh30 per bag. We get a profit of between Sh10,000 to Sh12,000 from every lorry,” said Moses.
Maurice Odhiambo who is a member of the group said their customers are mostly the people who want to try small scale farming in the slums.
“A person can order soil needed to put in sacks so that he can plant vegetables. These are the people we always target since they are always buying from us. Others plant flowers and onions in sacks too,” said Odhiambo.
The chairman Emmanuel Sakwa said the rains have brought them more customers.
Their biggest challenge for now is to ensure the soil is not swept away by the ongoing rains.
