Kibera MP Ken Okoth has urged nurses in Kibera to look for opportunities in the UK following a decision UK government to allow recruitment of nurses from outside European Economic Area.
Through his official Facebook and twitter accounts on Thursday, Okoth challenged his constituents to consider applying for the jobs that are currently in Britain.
“Kibra nurses, time to consider working in the UK. The National Health Service is hiring to backfill shortage of nurses in Britain. https://t.co/b4Sq3km4Ii,” reads the post in part.
The MP also reiterated on the need for Kenya to consider training surplus nurses and teachers who can then be exported to other countries that require their expertise.
“Kenya can affordably train surplus of nurses and teachers. Export labour migration and brain circulation is good,” he wrote.
He was, however, forced by some critics to justify his proposal for labour export considering that Kenya is currently having a shortage of workforce especially in the public sectors such as health and education.
“We live in a global economy, our nurses serving abroad are part of diaspora and valuable for remittances and skills exchange,” he clarified.
