Doctors in Nairobi who took part in the 100-day strike will not be paid by the county government, Governor Evans Kidero has declared. The move by the governor, who is sponsored by ODM but enjoys a warm relationship with President Uhuru Kenyatta, is against a recent ‘directive’ by the head of state to governors to pay doctors for the days they were on strike. Dr Kidero said contractual agreements must be followed, and only doctors who did not take part in the three-month strike will be given their salaries. “Morally and contractually, you only get paid when you work and the people who worked will be paid,” the governor said, as per Nation.“How do you get paid when you do not work?” he posed. The Council of Governors have accused the president of pitting them against doctors, arguing that they did not have funds to pay medical officers who participated in the industrial action. They support Kidero’s position.
