Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has honoured former environmentalist Wangari Maathai- naming a city road after her.
This, the county chief said, was in honour of her environmental conservation efforts.
"Maathai's unrelenting spirit kept would be forest land grabbers at bay," Kidero said in a statement on Thursday.
According to the governor, Forest Road will now be called Wangari Maathai Road.
Wangari is remembered because of her relentless struggles to conserve the environment.
She shot to the limelight during former President Daniel Moi's regime when she resisted the construction of a highrise building at the present Freedom Corner at Uhuru Park.
She was, during that time battered by police who pooled her hair.
Kidero also honoured former Catholic cleric Cardinal Otunga.
The road between City Hall Annex, past Cardinal Otunga Plaza to Uhuru Highway will now be called Cardinal Otunga Road.
Kidero also renamed Cross Road in the CBD after veteran multi-party crusader Charles Rubia road.
He made the announcement during celebrations to mark Mashujaa Day at Pumwani grounds in Starehe constituency.
