The Nairobi government has invested its hope on the Senate to help it recover some Sh72 billion allegedly owed to it by the national government.
Senate invited Governor Evans Kidero for questioning this Thursday to furnish the House with more information about the said debt.
This comes after a petition by the Nairobi county government seeking Senate's help in the debt's recovery, a debt said to have accumulated over time.
“The purpose of this letter is to invite you to come and present the issues concerning the settlement of the debt owed to the Nairobi City County government by the national government,” reads part of the May 30 letter signed by Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye.
Kidero will present himself before the Finance and Budget committee Thursday 10am at County Hall.
“We further request that the said evidence/documentation that you may wish to present to the committee be forwarded to our offices before or on June 5, to enable the committee to acquaint itself with the information prior to the date of the meeting,” the letter further reads.
According to the county, the debt has arisen from land rates and parking fees that have accrued over the years, attracting heavy interest and penalties.
