Garissa County Deputy Commissioner Hiddi Galgalo has said the government will continue to distributing relief food to schools and vulnerable groups until drought ends.

Speaking on Wednesday where he presided over the distribution of 40 bags of rice and two cartons of cooking to 80 disabled persons in Garissa township, Galgalo said the government has allocated 100 bags of rice, beans and cooking oil for each of the eight locations in Garissa town.

"Vulnerable groups such as lactating mothers, the disabled, learning institutions and the old have been given priority as the beneficiaries since they are the worst hit by drought," said the administrator.

He noted that national government is committed to ensure no Kenyan dies of hunger during the drought.

Galgalo said food will be distributed according to emerging need in the county.

He warned assistant county commissioners, chiefs and assistant chiefs not to divert the relief food instead they ensure all the food reaches the target groups.

"The assistant county commissioners, the chiefs and their assistants who will take advantage and divert food to sell will not be spared by the law. Anyone, found will be sacked and prosecuted for endangering the lives of vulnerable Kenyans", he said.

Garissa chairman of the disability Adan Bille, urged the government to increase the food rations since the number of those in need has increased.

Herders in the county are travelling long distances with their livestock in search of water and pasture.
