A section of Kiganjo households in Thika are now without water for the fourth consecutive day.
This is after the owners of some rental houses failed to construct wastewater systems as directed by the water provider Thika Water and Sewerage Company (Thiwasco) leading to a disconnection.
Speaking in Kiganjo on Tuesday, Thiwasco field officer in the area Joel Mwaniki said that the water will only be reconnected after the set requirements are met.
"The deadline elapsed last Friday and that is why we've disconnected a number of households that are yet to dig the wastewater pits. We know that the tenants are being inconvenienced but safety requirements must be adhered to by their landlords," said Mwaniki.
He noted that the wastewater which was being left to flow freely outside many plots was a potential health hazard. Some of the affected residents have expressed their displeasure.
"I have a baby whose clothes have to be cleaned daily but now without water for the fourth day, I am in a serious crisis", said Ann Wanja, a Corner One resident.
Doreen Atieno, another resident said, "I have been fetching water from a neighbouring plot where we are being charged Sh10 per a 20-litre jerrican. It is too much for us especially with kids."
