A section of Kiganjo roadside traders want the Kiambu County government to construct them a market.

The traders say that they have paid levies for far too long without receiving any services in return.

Speaking in the area on Tuesday, they argued that they operate on open ground mostly at the roadsides where conditions are wanting.

"We are victims of almost everything from bad weather to hostile situations that may arise yet we pay levies like any other trader anywhere in this county," Francis Gikeri, a second-hand clothes seller at Kona One said on Tuesday.

Another trader, Miriam Mukami who sells farm products said that since the rains started almost two months ago, it has become a nightmare to do any meaningful business.

"How do you even operate in such an area where passing vehicles splash you and your merchandise with muddy water. It is hectic," Mukami said.

They also say that they have been victims of all forms of accusations ranging from causing traffic to throwing materials in the drainage trenches that cause blockages.

"We do not want to be seen as a bother to other people. We are not hawkers and that is why even the county levy collectors come to collect money from us," John Nduati said.

They said that a rumour that has been flying in the area for a long time that there were plans to relocate the recently razed Madaraka market in Makongeni to Kiganjo should be actualised and they be given the first priority.

"Our appeal is to our MCA Elizabeth Muthoni to take our plight to the county government and see to it that we have a formal area of operation," another trader, Joyce Wangechi said.
