Gatundu North MP Francis Kigo Njenga has slammed the coffee board management over late payments to farmers.
The legislator is demanding to know the status of Gatundu North coffee that has been already been milled and marketed by Kenya cooperative coffee exporters.
Speaking at St Joseph the Worker Catholic church on Sunday, Kigo said as per the Coffee Act, proceeds of sales must be remitted to all farmers within 14 days of the prompt date in case of any auction and for direct sales before shipment.
"I am aware that majority of Gatundu North coffee has been sold at the auction and therefore proceeds should by now have been remitted to our farmers," he said.
Kigo now want a confirmation whether the farmers in Gatundu North were paid.
"I am also aware over 17000 bags of clean coffee are currently being held at the KPCU Dandora complex in Nairobi by KCCE," he revealed.
The parliamentarian added that the matter was urgent as the delay in remittance of farmers dues had caused untold suffering amongst constituents and thus a response of not later than Thursday May 19 should be issued.
He said as the member of parliament elected by Gatundu North electorates will look forward to a response from above matters of concern to the farmers.
