Nakuru County Assembly Speaker Susan Kihika is the latest leader to join those opposed to use of plastic bags in the county.

Kihika attributed various problems bedeviling the county to plastic bag menace.

“When we control plastic bags menace we immediately deal with issues like water borne diseases including cholera and dysentery which are basically as a result of blocked and clogged drainage in the county,” she told a Journalist on Monday in Nakuru.

An environmental pressure group from Nakuru county led by James Wakibia last year started a campaign against the use of plastic bags in the county.

The Kenya Wildlife Service has already raised the red flag on the adverse effects of plastic bags in Lake Nakuru National Park and how it has led to migration of several animals including the flamingos which are a major tourist attraction in the county.

The KWS said it collects tonnes of plastic bags from the lake which has continued to threaten the environment of the lake.

Gioto dumpsite has been the main bone of contention in the county, with the county government accused of poor management of the site which has led to washing away of waste by rains into rivers which end up in the lake.
