An irate group of women in Kijabe took to the streets on Wednesday morning over what they termed rampant brewing and selling of illicit brew in the region.
The demonstrations that went on for several hours brought to a standstill activities in Kijabe town following closure of businesses to avert losses.
The group blamed the authorities of sleeping on their jobs, which has given illicit brewers an opportunity to continue with their activities unhindered.
Grace Wambui, a demonstrator, blamed Murang’a County 'immigrants' who have pitched tent in the region with illicit brewing skills. This, she said, has left many families broken. She added that drinking sprees in Kijabe have not only affected adults but also underage children who have turned to stealing to maintain their acquired lifestyles.
“We are not happy with the way the illicit brewers have gone on with their activities unhindered," she said.
"We will continue fighting to make sure brewing dens are wiped out of our area and if police are not going to assist us in this, then we will be forced to take the law into our hands and flush them out.”
Area police boss Alfred Makoma, who was present, assured the residents that they will maintain close ties with the residents to help them wipe out the disaster.
