Kikuyu elders from Nakuru County have pledged to offer counseling services to initiates as they transit to adulthood.
The elders, who spoke on Monday during a special ceremony to celebrate installation of Daniel Kigochi as the County Elders chairman said they will also support boys from poor families to undergo circumcision.
Led by Naivasha MP John Kihagi, County majority leader Waithuki Njane and Lake view ward MCA Wanyoike Wanango, the elders said that current drop in good morals among the youth is occasioned by failure by elders to provide leadership.
“It is high time elders led by example in order to counter social ills like consumption of illicit brews and drug abuse especially among the youths,” said Wanyoike.
While declaring their support for churches that have organised boys’ circumcision in various areas, the elders said that they are willing to partner with like-minded individuals and organisations in order to bring about behavior change.
December holidays serve as circumcision time for most communities in the country, where young boys and girls undergo the right of passage to adulthood.
The elders have already sponsored more than 300 boys for circumcision.
