A section of Juakali artisans in Kikuyu Sub-County has called on the county government to help them market their products.
Speaking to this writer the youthful artisans singled out market as their main challenge.
Area Juakali Association chairman, Patrick Mwai, said that getting ready market is not easy.
“As operators of this business venture, we can hardly experience consistent good returns due to the unpredictable market,” said Mwai.
According to Mwai, their items are always made on time but getting a ready market has not been easy.
He said unavailability of market leads them to incurring a lot of losses since the items remain unsold for quite some time.
Mwai revealed that the only time they make good profit is on the month of February during form one intake.
He further said that the sector has recently employed many youths hence need for reforms to accommodate them.
“The informal sector has absorbed many youths. We are therefore urging the county government to reform it so that it can even accommodate more youths,” said Mwai.
He urged the county government to assist the artisans by building them sheds to ensure they conduct their business in good environment.
“We kindly urge the county government to build us more sheds,” said Mwai.
He finally echoed the issue of allocation of funds to the informal sector as well as acquiring modern machinery through the government’s help.
“This way there will be a definite improvement on the quality of our products,” notes Mwai.
