The youth in Kikuyu sub-county have been urged to take advantage of the interest-free government loans to empower themselves.
Sub-county youth officer Maureen Musyoki said the youth should exploit the opportunities offered by the funds to grow their projects.
Musyoki said that Kikuyu is lagging behind other sub-counties in Kiambu County when it comes to acquiring loans from the youth enterprise development fund.
She said that majority of the youth are not interested in taking up the loans which would help them start their own businesses either as a group or as individuals.
Musyoki regretted that the biggest challenge that her office is facing is that some of the youth groups are disorganised and are not sustainable. Some of the group leaders are also allegedly misusing funds or diverting them for their own personal benefits.
She revealed that her office was planning a talent development programme to identify and nurture talents which will go a long way in ensuring that the youths use their gifts to benefit themselves.
The officer singled out sports as the main area her office will be looking at closely because it has the potential to become a source of income for the youths.
