Following the escalating rainy spell, the market has turned into a muddy filthy lot oblivious of the outbreak of the cholera that has continued to spread in most parts of the country.

The traders are now calling for Kiambu County government to allocate funds for upgrading the market that they claim has since been left out while other markets have been face-lifted.

“Our customers even the regular ones are reluctant to come to the market when it rains. It is muddy, dirty and they even doubt the hygiene standards of the goods we sell,” said Hannah Wangeci trader.

Wangeci added that the market corridors are impassable and appealed to the county government do something on drainage and conduct regular clean ups since we pay taxes just like other Kenyans.

The location of the market, which is adjacent to the main dumping site, also poses a great threat to the hygienic and health standards especially during rainy seasons as other waterborne diseases might break out.

Mercy Muriuki, a random customer placed the blame on the Kikuyu sub-county administration for failing to uphold hygiene standards thereby putting the public at risk.

“This is the only market we have in town. The condition has been wanting and I wonder what those are mandated to manage such public facilities are doing,” lamented Muriuki.

Among other facilities they want upgraded include permanent spacious shades and reconstruction of the perimeter wall that was demolished during the construction of the adjacent Southern by pass.
