Chinese contractors are at work to expand and improve drainage of certain roads in Kikuyu town in preparation for the construction of the Kikuyu-Nakuru Highway by-pass.

The expansion of the drainage system that will ensure the roads remain in good shape for a longer time.

A policeman has been assigned the duty to ensure vehicles move along the roads smoothly without causing any obstruction.

Roadside sellers are however worried because the drainage leaves no space for them to sell their products. They are happy with the government’s effort to expand the drainage but are devastated since their source of livelihood will be affected.

Martha Wanjiru, a second-hand clothes dealer says she is worried knowing that she will no longer be able to sell at the roadside since the works began today.

Being a single mother, she said her business is the sole source of her income to raise her two daughters.

A shoe seller, Mark Mundia said that the government should compensate them since their businesses will be highly affected by the ongoing construction.

Kikuyu sub-county ward administrator, Joseph King'ori, however, said that the roadside hawkers are illegally at their place of work, as no one is allowed to sell along that road.

He said that was the reason the sellers have not been consulted.
