The chairlady of Uzalendo Women SelfHelp Group, Gladys Kangu said that the 13-year-old girl was to undergo FGM with the approval of her parents.

She said that the girl informed one of the women in the group who alerted the chairlady for immediate action.

Kangu revealed that the group has been fighting FGM for a year now after realising there were families that were yet to let go of the tradition.

She said that the group immediately stormed the home of the girl in Ondiri and took her away while alerting the police who arrested both parents.

"We are not going to stop the fight against FGM until the ppractice is completely eliminated. I want to urge residents to be very helpful in this fight and not to allow such acts to happen to the girl child," said Kangu.

She revealed that the group will fund the education and upkeep of the girl and any other girl who is rescued from undergoing the cruel act.

"Some of these female street children are in the streets because they ran away from FGM," she added.

Kikuyu OCPD Mutune Maweu warned against condoning FGM saying anyone found to have forced a child to undergo the cut or attempting to do so will be arrested.

He said that the parents of the girl are in custody as they await to be taken to court on Tuesday.

"I want to warn those parents who have intentions of forcing their girls to undergo the act that they will be charged," said Maweu.
