A youth group in Kikuyu has embarked on sensitising youths in high schools concerning drug abuse and its effects.

Speaking in Kikuyu Township Secondary School on Monday, the chairman of Reformed Youth group in Kikuyu Stephen Wachira said the group comprises of 25 members who have recovered from the effects of drugs.

He added that most of them started using drugs while still in high school and that’s why they opted to take the campaign to secondary schools so as to curb drug abuse among school going children.

The chairman said there are very many cases of drug abuse in schools which all brought about by peer pressure.

Wachira said some students join high school not knowing anything about drugs but later end up abusing drugs hence loosing focus in their lives.

He said many young people experiment with drugs without knowing the effect it would have on their lives and only become aware of the negative effects once they get addicted.

Wachira said students should not use drugs as it may eventually end up making them loose what’s important to them at a young age.

"Drug abuse among youths is a total disaster and we are here as victims of different types of drugs. I would like to urge students to shun drug abuse as it may lead them to engage in criminal activities so as to be able to sustain the behaviour,"  said Wachira.

He urged teachers to support the fight against drug abuse by encouraging the students to attend forums organised by the Students Campaign Against Drugs (SCUD) club. He also advised the students to part of the club so that they can be empowered to sensitise others on the same.
