Kikuyu MCA Binary Wainaina has urged youths in the area to be entrepreneurs, so as to curb idleness and drug abuse.
Speaking at a youth empowerment programme at the Nazarene Church in Kikuyu town on Monday, Wainaina called upon youths not to rely on white collar jobs as they have the ability to be businesspeople.
He added that most youths in the area have started engaging in drug abuse, which is as a result of lack of employment.
The MCA encouraged youths to form groups that they can manage and set up businesses as a group, which will enable them grow, and can later on register as a group and even get the Uwezo fund money.
“Most of those who engage in crime and drug abuse are youths and they do this out of lack of employment. We can fight these menace if we start taking other positive alternatives to make it in life,” he said.
He continued by encouraging the youths not to give up in life if they did not get good grades or maybe manage to finish form four, saying what makes the difference is the mind set of each individual.
Wainaina promised the youth that he will support them financially when he sees their effort to start being entrepreneurs.
The chairlady of the youth empowerment programme Gladys Njoki, while speaking after the meeting, said that the programme’s aim is to encourage the youth and improve their financial status.
Njoki explained that the youths need to be encouraged to venture into entrepreneurship, especially now that white collar jobs are limited.
She added that despite encouraging them, they are also set to start an entrepreneurial programme that will educate the youths on being successful business people.
