A youth group in Kikuyu Sub-County has ventured into nappier grass farming as a source of livelihood.
Speaking in Kikuyu on Monday Young Farmers club chairman, Michael Ngure, said the initiative was started two years ago by a group of ten members.
According to Ngure, the group normally leases a piece of land from local residents in which they grow nappier grass.
“Through the nappier grass project, we have managed to garner huge profits as a group. Currently the venture is a source of livelihood to most of us,” said Ngure.
He notes that last year they managed to make a profit of Sh1million. The money helped them to purchase seven motorbikes; for now the motorbikes are operating in Kikuyu and Wangige area.
Ngure notes that most youths have great business ideas only that they are financialy limited.
He lauds Jubilee government for Uwezo funds saying that the loans will help to stir development country wide.
“For a long time now many of us have always believed in white collar jobs. We often think it’s the only platform of living sustainable life by earning good income but this is not true,” says Ngure.
Ngure says that his group is committed to invest in agricultural related activities since there is potential in the sector.
He further urged Kenyan youths to take the initiative of coming up with innovative ideas to boost them financially.
