Kilifi County government on Wednesday dispatched more than 3,000 condoms to flood victims camping at Garashi Secondary school, after they had earlier requested for them.
County Health Minister Anisa Omar in a statement confirmed that her department had also set up a clinic in one of the buildings at the school, which will be addressing minor health issues that will be arising because of congestion. The officials also promised to re-supply the condoms if there shall be a need, in coming days.
“Treatment of all minor illnesses including a provision of condoms and contraceptives is ongoing at the camp. More than 3,000 condoms have been given out and we shall keep on re-filing when needs arises. We have set a clinic at the camp manned by two health workers, where one works during the day and another at night,” Dr Anisa said.
On Monday, the victims had requested the county government to consider their request for condoms and contraceptives as an urgent problem, because of the dangers they had anticipated.
“The need for condoms here is great. Some of us came with our teenagers and, since they are sexually active, our fear is that they may engage in unprotected sex, which could lead to infections,” said Mzee Kitsao, an elder.
