Kilifi County is one of the places at the coasts, that is affected much with floods.
Kenya Defence Forces soldiers recently rescued not less than 1,000 Kilifi County residents, following raging floods due to heavy rains being experienced across the country. The situation was made worse after River Sabaki burst its banks, offloading its waters into the villages.
The flood-victims have surprised Kenyans when they requested the county government to supply them with condoms. It has been always the order of the day for such victims to request for basic things like food products, clean water, shelter and such like stuffs.
The victims are saying that condoms are much needed because the camps are congested, with teenagers who are very sexually active.
“The need for condoms here is great. Some of us came with our teenagers and, since they are sexually active, our fear is that they may engage in unprotected sex, which could lead to infections,” said Mzee Kitsao, an elder.
"We need condoms because we are congested here, from different places."
"We also don't know each other's HIV status and maybe you have met with your lover who you used to be intimate with previously," said a woman.
