A top county official in Kilifi has said the county government has recovered Sh8 million out of the Sh51 million county funds that were lost through corrupt dealings.
In a statement sent to newsrooms on Monday, the county's Finance Chief Officer Ben Chilumo said the county had only lost Sh51million and not Sh1.18billion as reported by a section of the media.
He said the allegations were based on payments by the administration.
“We have verified these payments are genuine transactions made by the county government, for goods and services rendered. Some of the payments are for taxes withheld and paid to the Kenya Revenue Authority, while some are monies paid to our projects retention account held at the Diamond Trust Bank,” he said.
“I wish to confirm that only Sh51 million was irregularly paid to various accounts belonging to companies based in Nairobi,” he added.
The county government has since suspended 10 senior officials linked to the scam that has rocked Governor Amason Kingi's administration.
