Kilifi Speaker Jimmy Kahindi has become the latest leader to lose his security detail, after they were withdrawn under unclear circumstances, days after two coast governors suffered the same.
Mombasa’s Ali Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi, lost their securities without clear explanation, which came days after the two leaders had a public spat with the president.
According to the Speaker, his security officer received a phone call from his station, and told to report with immediate effect, where he was told to surrender his firearm and wait for further directions.
"I had only one security officer at the time he was called. So far, I have not been contacted by any authority," said Kahindi.
The speaker feels there is a wider scheme to threaten and intimidate some leaders, failing to understand how other leaders have their security details intact, safe for him and the two governors.
"At the end of the day, we are all under the mercy of God. The person who made the call to recall the security must have had reasons which are not known to me," he said.
"If he or she feels it is necessary for me to have my security back, they will return. I will not contest the decision. I am keen on delivering my mandate to the public," he added.
Joho and Kingi had their security details withdrawn on Saturday, with the government, through statehouse spokesperson Manoah Esipisu insisting it was a reorganization in the VIP protection programme.
