Residents of King’eero Village in Kikuyu Sub-County are decrying the lack of any action over a broken sewer that exposes them to health risks.
The sewer has allegedly been flowing for the past three weeks.
Speaking to a vegetable vendor in the area, Rachel Wangari, she had to shut her business after the sewer broke. She added that despite their numerous efforts to report to the relevant authorities regarding the issue, nothing has been done.
Another resident, Grace Wairimu, said that the sewage had caused a lot of pollution even to the locals in their houses. She revealed that their children were restricted from going outside to play as the sewage was a danger to their health.
However, the Kikuyu Deputy Environment Officer Stephen Ng’ang’a said that no reports had been made concerning the sewer but that his office will act immediately. He said that locals had a habit of not reaching the right places in such cases.
Ng’ang’a revealed that this was the second time locals were complaining and they had not reported the matter which would not have taken that long to address.
He urged those with complaints to report them to the relevant authorities instead of condemning the office for alleged inaction.
