Defiant Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi has dismissed calls to have him step down following revelation of grand corruption in his county.
Top leaders along them Deputy President William Ruto have challenged the ODM governor to take responsibility following alleged loss of Sh51 million from the county’s bank accounts.
On Sunday, Kingi insisted that his administration had taken measures to recover the money adding that the county government would open civil cases against the companies that were involved in the fraud.
“There is nothing for me to resign because we know the actual thieves. They have been suspended and it is time to give authorities time to carry out investigations,” he said.
“As a county, we are preparing a legal challenge where we shall have the companies involved taken to court. It is unfair for people to call for my resignation yet I am not a thief,” he said.
Last week, opposition leader Raila Odinga came in defense of the embattled governor, a move that has sparked a nationwide condemnation.
