Kilifi County boss Amason Kingi on Friday hurriedly called for a meeting with Italian Billionaire Flavio Briatore after he threatened to pull out of Malindi because of the garbage mess.
The wealthy foreigner has said that he will sell his Lion in the Sun Hotel after the county government failed to heed his call for proper garbage management. The foreigner said that the state of roads in Malindi is also pathetic, adding that it has affected his business in different ways.
He also said that the government has pledged to set up an airport on the area but nothing is forthcoming seven years down the line. Sources, however, indicate that the county officials did not meet the billionaire after his threats. The newly-appointed Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala on Saturday met the investor to address the matter.
Reports further indicate that newly-appointed Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala on Saturday, January 6 met with the billionaire to address his concerns.
Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers Kilifi County chairperson Philip Chai said that the government has reached out to the billionaire urging him to stay put as measures are put in place to address the matter.
“The county has contacted the Billionaire Resort’s management to arrange for a meeting with the Italian investor because his hotels generate a lot of revenue for the government and have employed a lot of people,” said Chai.
