Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi has urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to waive the huge debt burden facing his county ahead of the August general poll.

Addressing residents at Chumani in Kilifi North Sub-County during the International Women’s Day celebrations on Wednesday, Kingi lashed out at President Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto for failing to implement development projects in the county, despite pledging to do so.The outspoken governor criticised Jubilee leaders for hoodwinking Kilifi residents to back them for another term in office using projects funded by donors. Kingi noted that projects funded by the government have pushed his government into huge debts that have affected development in the area for the last four years. “The Kenyatta government has done very little for the people of Kilifi. Many projects belong to the County government. We are now paying a debt of Sh90 million yearly because of the health equipment at the Malindi Sub-County hospital. Another one is Sh2.3 billion Magarini-Kakuyuni-Kilifi water project. The loan is being paid to World Bank,” he said, as quoted by Standard. Kingi challenged Uhuru to waive the debt facing his government the same way he did for coffee farmers in central.“If Jubilee can waive Sh2.3 billion debt for coffee farmers, let them do the same to the people of Kilifi. We are paying all they say they have given us,” he added. The Governor and his Mombasa Counterpart Hassan Joho have affirmed that they will rally the electorate to smoke out UhuRuto from power.
