Kinungi residents in Naivasha have raised concerns over rising accidents involving pedestrians along the Naivasha-Kinungi- Nakuru road.
The residents who were speaking today in the area, claim that the number of pedestrians mostly school children being hit by over speeding motorists has risen.
Josiah Munene, a trader at Kinungi said that it has become risky for school children to walk on their own along the highway.
He claimed that despite their being road signs providing safety of school children, most motorists still over speed.
“I have witnessed three cases of school children being knocked down and injured by speeding vehicles,” said Munene.
He said most vehicles often speed off after causing accidents.
Lucy Muhuni, a teacher at a local school in Kinungi attests to this allegations. She said that two of her students were recently hit by a speeding vehicle.
She claimed that road signs that existed along the Kinungi highway are no longer there.
“We appeal to the government through the relevant authorities to come to our aid by dealing with errant motorists,” she said.
The teacher further urged the government to erect road bumps and signs along the road.
“The safety of our students who trek every day to school is a concern to us,” she said.
A speeding saloon hit and injured two traders on Friday who were selling onions along the road. The driver of the vehicle sped off but a manhunt for him has been launched.
Nakuru County Traffic base commander Joseph Mwangi over the weekend warned errant motorists, saying they will be dealt with accordingly.
Mwangi said that the traffic department has employed use of speed cameras to nab motorists who are fond of over speeding.
