Kinungi Location Chief Sam Mwangi says that only two percent of youths in the area apply for Uwezo Funds.
Mwangi has challenged local youths to apply for the funds to start income-generating projects.
“Youth from Kinungi should form groups to be eligible to access Uwezo Funds. Uwezo Fund is meant to improve the living standards of youth said Mwangi.
Speaking on Tuesday at Kinungi Shopping Centre during a public meeting, Mwangi called for transparency and accountability in the disbursement of Uwezo Funds to allow all youths countrywide to benefit from the kitty.
“Youth from Kinungi have not taken seriously the issue of Uwezo Fund despite of government's interests in empowering youth,” said Mwangi.
The administrator said that the fund was created for youth empowerment and urged youth to seek information from his officer on how to access the fund.
“Most youth have no information on how to access the fund and I urge them to come to my office for advice”, said Mwangi.
The chief's remarks comes at a time when Finance cabinet secretary, Henry Rotich, allocated Sh1.45 billion to the fund for youth empowerment during last week’s budget.
Mwangi said that youth engagement in nation building through Uwezo Fund would reduce crimes.
“Uwezo Fund creates an environment where youth engage in nation building, hence reducing crimes among youth,” said Mwangi.
