County governments will be forced to enhance their internal revenue collection mechanisms as one way of dealing with delayed disbursement of funds from the national government.
According to Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui, enhanced internal revenue collection by counties will go a long way in sorting out problems created by the delayed disbursement of county allocations from the exchequer
“As counties we are looking at ways of increasing out internal revenues and the reality is that in the last financial year most counties dropped in terms of internal revenues and those are some of the issues we will be addressing,” said Kinyanjui
Speaking on the sidelines of a workshop organized for the senate leadership, Kinyanjui said that counties are going through serious financial challenges due to delayed inflows from the treasury.
“It is true counties are going through serious challenges due to delayed inflows from treasury,” he said.
He added that relationship between counties and suppliers are being strained because counties are not honoring their part of the bargain when it comes to payment of gods and services offered.
“Suppliers are adding a 20-30% mark up on anything they supply because their payments are delaying for up to six months and sometimes even a year,” he said.
