Kiogora said the department has seen a lot of adverse effects brought forth by the continued use of plastic bags and the intent to ban them would go a long way in safeguarding the environment.

“We presented the bill to the county assembly and they have gone through it very well and into detail and the only one thing that remains is public participation so that the public can give their input. Then from there, depending on the outcome of the participation and the assembly’s take, the bill may be passed,” he said Thursday when contacted.

He said the bill has prescribed fines or jail terms for persons found using or disposing plastic bags indiscriminately.

The County’s Legal and Justice Committee has been put to task in debating the motion.
