The class two pupil is said to have gone to the latrine to relieve himself at noon when he reportedly stepped on a faulty wood that dismantled, making him to fall beneath.

The mother, Peninah Kemunto, said she heard a desperate cry from the child and informed the neighbours who responded in time and rescued the boy before he was rushed to Hema hospital in Kisii town.

“He had gone at about lunch time to relieve himself and I think he slipped inside because the floor had shown weak signs. I had informed the father who is in Mombasa about the condition and plans were underway to construct another latrine,” she said.

“I am glad that my son was rescued by good Samaritans. The latrine wasn’t really deep and perhaps that is why we managed to do it. He sustained serious burns, besides dislocating one of his legs but he is in a stable condition,” she added.

Area village elder, Charles Manani, confirmed the incident and cautioned residents against using faulty facilities that could threaten their safety.

“I have seen and it was indeed a very bad incident. The child almost lost his life. Residents should ensure such latrines are in safe conditions especially in this rainy season if at all we are ready to prevent such calamities,” he said.
