Confirming the incident, area Chief Philip Chemngok said owners screamed after they found him carrying the chicken, prompting the public to intervene.

''We suspect the thieves were four but three of them have managed to escape,'' he said.

Chemngok however condemned the brutality meted on the suspect, saying it was unlawful for the mob to beat him up and kill him.

"You should not take the law in your hands, no matter the crime a suspected has committed. We have authorities to take care of such,'' he warned.

The body of the deceased was taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary as police launch investigations into the incident.
