The Ministry of Education has said that parents are free to use mobile money transfer services to pay school fees for their children.
Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang said Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi was misquoted on the matter when it was reported that that the government has banned paying of school fees using mobile transfer services.
Mr Kipsang in a statement said Mr Matiang’i on Friday during a visit at Homa Bay Primary School was misquoted when he said the government has prohibited use of M-Pesa in paying school fees.
Mr Kipsang said parents are free to pay school fees using mobile money, but said all schools must issue receipts to parents when they pay school fees using the mobile money transfer services.
“Public schools are required under the school fees guideline the Ministry has issued, to provide receipts against all payments they receive, be it the direct payments the government payment makes to schools under the Free Primary and Free Day secondary education programmes, or the fees parents and guardians pay,” read the statement in part.
“Schools are hereby encouraged to continue receiving payments from parents in whatever modes they find suitable for them as long as they give receipts to parents and guardians as required,” said Mr Kipsang.
Last week on Friday, it was reported that Mr Matiang’i had banned parents from making any fees payments via the mobile money transfer saying this was aimed at combating corruption in schools.
