Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi's gubernatorial bid was on Saturday dealt a huge blow after President Uhuru Kenyatta declined to openly endorse him.
The lawmaker is gunning for the gubernatorial seat on a Jubilee Party ticket.
The Head of State affirmed that he had no preferred candidate in the seat currently held by governor Peter Munya.
“I don’t have a preferred candidate for Meru, given I warm up to either Kiraitu or Munya. Their affiliation is inclined toward the government,” Uhuru said.
“I won’t lie to you; I know the reality on the ground; some of you (rally gathering) will vote for Munya. I don’t want to lose the votes of Meru people because of my allegiance to one of the Meru County gubernatorial candidates,” he added.
Munya will be seeking re-election on a PNU Party ticket, after he ditched the Alliance Party Kenya (APK) which has since merged with Jubilee Party.
