A day after Interior CS Fred Matiangi ordered the closure of all bars operating in Kiambu County, Kirigiti residents have come out gun-blazing to protest against one local developer who is constructing a bar opposite a school.
According to residents who are neighbours to Zawadi Primary School (formerly Kirigiti Prime), the developer is constructing a 'makuti' bar which is now near completion.
"It started as a carwash and then we saw a building come up. On asking the 'fundis', they told us that the building would house a wines and spirits outlet. They never consulted us on the suitability of such a business being opposite to a boarding school," Faith Nyambura, a resident said on Wednesday.
The school management says it has been writing to the Kiambu County Government for sometime now about the same matter but nothing has been done so far.
"This is not even a wines and spirits outlet. It is a bar and we are fearing that having such a business right at the school gate isn't going to be good for us being a boarding school. We wrote to the sub-county administrator as well as Nema 3 weeks ago but we haven't gotten any feedback," said the school principal.
Speaking at the same time Riabai MCA Hezron Gachui said that no bar will allowed to operate near a school.
"We are very happy by what the governor is doing in regards to crackdown on illicit brews in Kiambu. That's why we are confident that if this is a bar that the owner intends to open here, he will not be allowed," said Gachui.
