Kisii University held its first ever Women Empowerment Campaign on Friday to educate students on handling the girl child in the community.

The ceremony was launched by Kirinyaga woman representative Purity Wangui who encouraged the students, especially the ladies, to run for government seats terming it as new beginning for the girl child.

"What a man can do, a woman can do it better, this applies to job opportunities and any other chances in the society," Wangui said.

Anti FGM Board Chief Executive Officer Benerdete Lolojuu who accompanied Wangui discouraged the Female Genital Mutilation culture among communities which practice it.

"Ladies should not undergo FGM as it is illegal in Kenya, we should by all means kill this culture," Lolojuu said.

This campaign was received positively but a percentage of the male students complained of negletion of the boy child by the government and NGOs.

"Why is it about the girl child only? The boy child will become extinct soon. Or should we sort ourselves? The government needs to balance," said Brian Kati, a student in the institution.

Women rights activist, Warima Mugi, sensitized the students on need for proper education of the girl child.

Fena Gitu, a renowned Kenya female musician, closed the campaign by performing her hits.
