A section of residents in Kisian in the outskirts of Kisumu Town are apprehensive of what they call a time bomb that is about to explode.
They say that a paints factory under construction in the area is likely to cause air and noise pollution if it starts its operations.
"I do not like the smell of fresh paint. It will get worse when I will breathe it in every day," said Odhiambo Juma, a resident.
He adds that the factory is stationed very close to residential buildings which could be a threat to many. Juma said the factory will not only have an impact on human life but that of plants and animals as well.
"The waste from the factory will be directed either into the river or the lake which will affect our livestock and crops," he said.
Milka Atieno who lives next to the walls of the factory said that the machines are likely to make a lot of notice when in operation.
"We live here in harmony. The sounds we could hear were those of cars and birds. I am sure the factory will cause much more noise," complained Atieno.
Attempts to get comments from the factory about pollution bore no fruits. It has an approval from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA).
The factory that is nearing completion will produce water paints. Raw materials will be transported from Nairobi to the site for mixing, packaging, storage and dispatch to the market.
