Avocado farmers in Kisii County have expressed hope that the county government will set up a processing plant as they were promised.

The growers said once the plant is set up, middlemen will not have the opportunity to exploit them.

“The county government of Kisii promised to set up the processing plant in 2013, we are still hoping that the dream will come through because we will have a ready market for our produce hence weeding out middlemen who now dictate prices for avocados since they are highly perishable,” said Richard Sure, one of the farmers.

Sure said the county has a high number of farmers growing avocado and the county will not regret setting up the factory.

“There are many farmers growing avocados which will be sold to the factory for processing. The county will not regret setting up the factory because there will be a plentiful supply of avocado,” he added.

Another farmer, Elijah Omanga stated that he has been waiting for the factory.

“I have not lost hope since I believe the county has good plans to ensure the factory is set up. Middlemen are not the best option for me only that I deal with them because I don’t have a ready market,” he said.

The growers were speaking at Daraja Mbili market on Sunday.
