Lack of modern and permanent shelters for businesses is lagely to blame as many artisans operate in the open.

"My business has no structure to protect me and my costumers against the rains, so I close my business whenever the rains start," said John Mogaka, a mechanic at Gudka.

The heavy rainfall has also destroyed several kiosks especially in the largest open market in Daraja Mbili.

"These rains don't spare our makeshift kiosks yet the county government does not renovate the drainage systems," said Ester Gesare, a businesswoman in Daraja Mbili.

"I used to close my boutique at 8pm but nowadays I close as early as 6pm to avoid the evening showers," said Maurine Kwamboka.

Business owners are now appealing to the county government to hasten the finishing of the new market in Daraja mbili to avoid the unfavorable weather.

Last week, Kenya Metrological Department warned about flash floods in various parts of the country, including Nyanza region.
