Kisii County Government has taken a step to distribute 10,000-litre capacity tanks to public schools that will enable the institutions to harvest rainwater.
The project will see 45 schools get the water tanks.
Kisii County Executive for Energy, water and Natural resources Ms Skitter Ocharo said that at least one school in the 45 wards will benefit from the project.
Speaking in Nyaribari Masaba where she officiated a function she said that a lot of water was being wasted during this rainy season instead of being harvested for future use.
“With proper planning, harvesting and storage, rainwater can greatly supplement piped water. In the long run we will give all deserving public institutions a tank. Receiving heads will closely work with water officers to ensure they are properly installed,” she said.
Ms Ocharo said the County Government is looking forth in distributing more water tanks in the next financial year as this will help curb water challenge in learning institutions.
She regretted the fact that learners are forced to walk long distances to look for water during class hours as it wastes their time so much.
She also said that her department has started the construction of water schemes and revival of the stalled ones.
Ocharo said that the County Government is planning to drill boreholes in public schools across the 45 wards.
