Alphonse Ouko, an environmentalist in Kisii blames the slow movement in handling environmental matters to the ignorant and intentional act of the county to build structures as car wash centres along Daraja Moja river and Nyanchwa, knowing very well that the affluents run directly to the rivers.

Speaking to our reporter on Monday, he further noted that farmers are using the dirty water used by car washe centres in the area to water their plants, something that might result in disease outbreaks.

“It is surprising that the county can initiate such projects without the expertise of the professionals so that we do not end up polluting the environment that we should be protecting,” said Ouko.

Ouko urged the county government to work with speed and look for an alternative to implement the Environment Act, so as not to exploit it negatively on the basis of gaining political muscle, ignoring the public who are the consumers of the water.

Kisii county Director of environment Samson Bokea acknowledged the existence of the structures and said that the county was working on modalities to come up with a recycling hub at the areas structures have been built to enhance proper usage.

“On sewerage, we are already working on the achieving of maintaining sewerage systems that have been there for long and others which have been overloaded by many buildings in town using major manholes, but we need sometime to have that accomplished.” stated Bokea.
