The money is the arrears the contractors have been claiming that the county owes them.

On Sunday, Kisii County governor James Ongwae said the payment is part of the county’s efforts to clear debt backlog.

“We have been having financial challenges which have led to a bad relationship between the devolved unit and out service providers. But the payment is now a clear show that we are committed to appreciating the work of contractors for their efforts to develop our county,” he said.

The governor said the contractors should still work in the county and asked them to be patient whenever the county has not paid them.

“We should not be blamed for delayed payment because we also follow procedures to get money from the Nation Treasury which sometimes delays disbursing the money to counties. We are expecting that the Treasury will be releasing the fund to counties in time so that service providers and suppliers to be paid also in good time,” he added.
