Kisii county small-scale farmers need to be encouraged to produce and drive economies in the county, an agriculture officer has said.
Speaking to our reporter in his office on Monday, Iyabe Sub-county Agriculture officer James Makori advised all farmers to use the small pieces of land they have to produce quality food that can sustain them and sell the surplus to other counties.
“We need to drive this further by encouraging small-scale farmers to produce and drive economies in the areas they are working from,” said Makori.
According to the officer, there is need for the county to guarantee food security by encouraging schools and small-scale farmers to start vegetable gardens.
Makori further said the county has put in strategies that will see them implement this for the greater benefit the local farmers.
“We are happy that the county has employed more agriculture officers that will give the farmers the adequate training on how to utilise the little land available to produce more,” added Makori.
Kisii County is known for its fertile land and produces high volumes of different agricultural products, both for local consumption and export.
