On Thursday, Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi launched Geteri Water supply as part of celebrations to mark World Water Day.

The water project located at Geteri primary school grounds comprises a borehole fitted with a hand pump and will supply the local primary and secondary schools as well as the surrounding community.

Launching of the project will be a reprieve to the Geteri community that has been experiencing perennial water shortage for the past many years.

“As a County Government, we have an elaborate plan to increase access to clean water for all residents. To realize this, we are constructing water schemes and reviving stalled ones to ensure our people access reticulated water in their homes,” said Maangi.

He also announced that the Kisii County Government would soon launch Gesusu/Geteri water scheme that will serve the entire Gesusu ward and parts of Masimba ward.

“The project is nearing completion and it will serve public institutions, market centres including Masimba, Gesusu, Geteri and Nyamesocho.

Governor Ongwae and I will commission the project estimated to serve at least 15,000 people,” said the Deputy Governor.

Gesusu ward Member of County Assembly Benson Ntabo hailed the county government for projects saying it will be a reprieve for the community that has been hit by water shortage since independence.

He regretted that the Gesusu/Geteri water scheme could have been complete by now but vandals destroyed the distribution pipes worth millions of shillings.

County Executive Commissioner for Energy, Water, Environment and Natural Resources Dr Skitter Ocharo said the County was creating awareness about the need for environmental conservation to guarantee continuous water supply.

She called on residents to uproot blue gums near water catchment areas saying they have caused drying up of the rivers.
