Close family members of Peter Motari who was working as history teacher in the University of Bujumbura praised the heroic lecturer who managed to get out of  the country following a failed coup by a section of the army.

The East African nation is yet to stabilize after the incumbent president Pierre Nkurunzinsa announced his bid to contest for presidency for the third term, something that angered the opposition leading to skirmishes.

“I am happy that my only son managed to arrive in the country safely. We have feared for his life after demonstrations that were followed by an attempted coup in that country,” said Alex Ombiro, the father of the lecture.

According to them, they had been making frantic calls to reach their son but could not be reached in his official mobile phone.

“As a mother, I was very troubled that my son couldn’t be reached via mobile phone. We kept calling since we had hopes,” said, Vane Ombiro.

Motari said he had to take refuge in the neighboring Tanzania in a week before making his way to the country on Wednesday.

“I had no money because we were caught off guard. I had to use the Tanzanian route and was subsequently assisted by UNHCR officials after a special application,” he said.
