Most farmers admit to having to travel long distances in the search for the grass to feed their animals, and which they buy at costly prices.

According to Julius Nyandoro, a farmer in Kerina Sub County, he spends double the money he used to spend when animal feeds were available and when there were rains.

He says that the few who have Napier grass sell it at unaffordable prices hence forcing them to walk or hire cars to fetch the same commodity from the neighbouring county.

"This is the first time we are facing animal feed shortages. In the previous years we used to get them easily and also the few who had it, used to sell it at an affordable price," added Nyandoro.

In Kisii County, animal feed crisis is normally faced in January but for this time it has extended to February and farmers in the region are hoping rains will be on soon.
