Farmers in Boigesa Village of Giasaiga sub-location in Sameta sub-county, Kisii County are counting loses after porcupines invaded their Sukumawiki farms at night destroying the crops.
Farmers who talked to this writer at Nyakegogi shopping centre expressed their anger about the incident saying that after a long dry spell which subjected them to lack of green vegetables, porcupines are also causing them sleepless nights as they spend nights in their farms preventing the wild animals from destroying their crops just as rainy season begins which they say was to make them see a change in line with green vegetables production.
One of the farmers from the area Martha Mongina lamented that she was losing a lot of cash following the destruction of her Sukumawiki farms by porcupines.
"I cannot imagine that these wild animals are turning my joy into sorrow after invading my Sukumawiki farms at a time I was just about to enjoy my sweat now that there is a promising market for green vegetables," lamented Mongina.
Joseph Kinara, also another farmer from the Village who has been trying to chase the porcupines away from invading both his Sukumawiki and beans farm at night stated that the porcupines are very intelligent and wait only until farmers retire from gurding the farm just in a span of less than ten minutes to venture in uprooting and eating the crops.
"I have tried to keep vigil in my farm at night to keep the sturbon animals at bay, but they have become more clever as they strike immediately I have gone to sleep in the wee hours of the night," stated Kinara.
The farmers now want the State to help them stop the animal from further destroying their crops.
