Farmers in Kisii County have been advised to plant soya beans in the region.
According to the chief executive of soya bean firm NASEM, Kimani Mbugua, the company did a research and found Kisii County was fertile and can produce double the output other counties can produce in one season.
Addressing farmers in a conference in Kisii, Mbugua encouraged them to grow soya, stating that the company will be buying the soya beans from them at a good price.
The company, through the Ministry of Agriculture, is set to take soil samples from various counties to the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (Kari) laboratories for analysis of mineral content and moisture to identify other potential regions that can produce soya.
“Soya beans are economical and require very little moisture content in the soil and can do well in less humid area as it a drought resistance crop. I want to encourage all of you to plant the beans as it can survive even when there are no rains,” said Mbugua.
He also added that the company will establish agents to buy soya beans from the locals, which will make it easier for them to get a direct income.
